Wood: a renewable
resource

Responsibility starts with the raw material.

Austria is one of the most heavily forested countries in Europe. Around 48 percent of the country’s land area is covered by forests, and wood is Austria’s most important domestic renewable raw material. Every year, more wood grows in Austria’s forests than is harvested.

As a PEFC-certified company, Egger Holz gives preference to wood from PEFC-certified forests when sourcing timber. In this way, we support responsible forest management and the careful use of our valuable raw material – today and for future generations.

Electricity and heat from biomass

For more than 15 years, we have been generating electricity and heat from sawmill by-products in our biomass combined heat and power plant. The heat is used in our drying kilns, while in the future the electricity generated is intended to be used directly at our site.

Solar energy from our own rooftops

Since 2018, we have been using our rooftops to generate solar power. Today, our photovoltaic systems have a total installed capacity of around 950 kWp.

We already use part of the electricity generated by our newest photovoltaic system directly at our site. In the future, we aim to go one step further and use all of the electricity we generate ourselves to supply energy to our site.

100% of the wood is used

Making the fullest possible use of our valuable raw material, wood, is particularly important to us. We use bark and other sawmill by-products in our biomass combined heat and power plant to generate electricity and heat. The heat generated is used directly at our site, including for drying our sawn timber.

We supply wood chips and sawdust to the paper and pulp industry as well as to agricultural businesses.

In this way, we ensure that every tree is fully utilised.
